I have spent quite a bit of time evaluating desktop search. Recently I have moved back to X1. This was after Xobni proved to be a resource hog and kept crashing Outlook.
Here is a list of solutions I have tried, but no longer use:
- Copernic - http://tinurl.us/525ed1
I actually love this product, but recently is seems to be pretty unstable. - Windows Desktop Search - http://tinurl.us/6b157e
Does not do a good job of keeping the database up-to-date. When an e-mail comes in I file it right away, so if it doesn’t get indexed for a few hours, then desktop search isn’t much use to me. Plus it seems to loose e-mails that I can find by hand1 - Google Desktop - http://desktop.google.com/
Google really blew it with this product, the interface is just horrible. And the widgets don’t do anything for me. They should be a separate download.
…This leads me back to X1
X1 is not free like these others, but really seems to be worth the extra money, it is stable, fast and reliable. The index updates are fast and don’t seem to drag my PC to a halt, and it is well integrated into Outlook and the Desktop.
They have a 30 day trial, so if you are looking for something better than the free software that is out there, give it a try.
